"In Death I Linger On" Single Review by A&R Factory, Dec 2025

A&R Factory, on Dec 11, 2025, by Amelia Vandergast

Black Halo’s moniker instantly leaves you with the impression that you’re about to be greeted by an artist who thrives on the uncharted intersections of emotive duality, and In Death I Linger On proves that impression right from the first chilling breath of sound.

Through the torrid yet calming arrangement, urgent yet measured in its pacing, Black Halo folded a meditation on mortality into a lattice of intricate fingerpicked notes that wrap themselves around stormy tension. The track sits comfortably in progressive folk pop rock, although it also touches the spiritual post-rock sphere with a natural ease, carrying a timeless sense of ancient wisdom as it moves. With quasi-operatic vocals reminiscent of the theatricality found in Nightwish and Within Temptation, fused with Euro folk motifs and Latin guitars, Black Halo showed a steady hand in pulling visceralism to the surface through confessional performance rather than forceful theatrics. It’s the kind of sound that sinks its teeth in slowly, then refuses to loosen its hold.

Behind that intensity sits a duo who have weathered enough turbulence to pour lived truth into their work without posturing. The themes they explore in their wider discography echo the same emotional excavation that shaped their debut album, Utopia, a concept-driven piece built around troubled characters and the demons that chase them.

Years ago, guitarist Randy Ellefson stepped away entirely after a long cycle of vocalists dropping out and delaying the record. Time passed before he picked it back up, reconnecting with Chase Breedlove, whose recovery paved the way for the album’s completion. The partnership returned renewed, shaped by perseverance, and that persistence hums beneath the surface of In Death I Linger On, where mortality, reflection and the need for release meet in a single strike.

Lacaverna Review of the Utopia Title Track, Feb 2026

“From the United States, Black Halo presents “Utopia,” the title track of their debut album, a powerful and critically focused blast of melodic metal. The song reflects on the false promise of a hyper-connected world that, far from liberating, ends up exposing and emptying its inhabitants. With powerful riffs, dynamic drums, and a catchy chorus, the band builds an epic atmosphere that contrasts with lyrics marked by disillusionment with the impact of social media and the loss of privacy.

“The narrative describes a supposed technological paradise that transforms into a machine exploiting emotions, secrets, and identities. Set against a backdrop of intense melodies and robust production, the song balances power and questioning, prompting us to consider whether the digital revolution truly unites us or simply leaves us more isolated than ever.”

Zona Emergente Review of the Utopia Track, Feb 2026

Tension and mystery, this is what awaits us when listening to Black Halo with its "Utopia" soundtrack!

Today we are faced with a totally rock and energetic experience; we are talking about the American musical project that comes to fill us with emotion; Black Halo opens with a slow and calm structure, "Utopia" a long journey that for six minutes, with forty-nine seconds takes us to experience bursts of energy and adrenaline.

Its sound advances ferociously; there's no rush here, its sound develops slowly but explosively. This work avoids repetition, and we know this from the moment we see its label within the Progressive Rock genre, a genre characterized by its rhythmic instability.

The work is exciting, it has a melodic vocal performance that reminded me of projects like Dragon Force, it is a powerful project that lovers of virtuosic guitar solos will love, its speed is ideal for those who like crazy and explosive sounds; its saturation of arrangements makes it feel epic.
